“EXPORTING: Regulations, Documentation, Procedures”
"The most beneficial part was the sample
documents, definition of terms and symbols, and the
book seems like a very good reference to reinforce
the seminar."

"This resource book is great!"

“EXPORTING: Regulations, Documentation, Procedures”
and
“Understanding the International Supply Chain: Air & Ocean Logistics"
From IOMA’S REPORT MANAGING
EXPORT June 1999, P. 2:
Two Must-Have Items for Your Export
Library - Two publications well worth the
attention of export managers recently came across
ME’s desk. Their titles are: Exporting: Regulations,
Documentation, Procedures, and Understanding the
International Supply Chain: Air & Ocean Logistics,
both authored by George Thompson and Catherine J.
Petersen. The manuals are published by Global
Training Center and are used in their export
training seminars as well as by several
universities.
Thompson is counsel in the law firm of Neville,
Peterson LLP, and specializes in export and import
regulations and transactions and trade policy and
litigation. He is also a professor at George Mason
University of Virginia.
Catherine Petersen is an international consultant
and principal of C J Petersen & Associates, LLC and
consults and trains in export documentation and
letters of credit. She has taught at the undergraduate and
graduate levels for Metropolitan State University
cohorts in Taiwan, at Tamkang University - Taipei
campus and at Chung Kuo Institute of Technology.
Each manual is organized in a clear, easy-to-use
format, with every chapter beginning with “Key
Points to Consider” and ending with helpful
exercises (with answers) that make the publications
very valuable for training your export department
staff. Numerous charts and graphics take the reader
through the complex steps involved in the many
export operations.
Exporting opens with a much needed and helpful
introduction on structuring foreign sales, including
a detailed discussion of the crucial distinctions
between foreign sales reps, agents and distributors.
Other topics include contract negotiation issues, Incoterms,
pricing, customs and tariff planning—including a
full section on the use of Census’ Automated Export
System (AES); forms of payment; packing, transport,
and insurance requirements; documentation; and
compliance. Sample documents are shown and the
volume’s glossary has a full list of government and
private export resources and contact numbers, along
with an excellent index of definitions of trade
terms.
International Ocean and Air Transportation features
sections on transportation costs, packing, C-TPAT
(Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism),
working with freight forwarders & customs house
brokers, Incoterms, ocean bills of lading, common
carrier obligations to shippers, ocean
transportation and air waybills of lading,
airfreight transportation, insurance, and
documentation. Again, the manual features charts,
samples of the documents it describes, helpful
graphics, and end-of-chapter exercises. A list of
resources and glossary of terms is included.
